Samsung Selects Cypress OvationONS™ II Optical Navigation System For Samsung Intercept™ QWERTY Cell Phone

SAN JOSE, Calif., July 20, 2011 – Cypress Semiconductor Corp. (Nasdaq: CY) today announced thatSamsung Electronics Company Ltd. has selected the OvationONS™ II optical navigation system for its Android-based Intercept phones. The OvationONS II sensor will be used in the optical track pad modules inside the Intercept for easy and intuitive single-handed screen and menu navigation.

Cypress’s PSoC®-based OvationONS II enables a fully-contained optical finger navigation module system that includes a laser, sensor and processor. It employs Cypress’s patented OptiCheck™ technology—a proprietary, speckle-based two-dimensional comb array technology—to determine finger motion and provide highly accurate and reliable user navigation interfaces for mobile devices.

The Intercept also offers users both a touchscreen and a full slider QWERTY keyboard, offering a convenient and functional way to enjoy faster web surfing, downloads, messaging, and more. Based on the Android operating system, it delivers features such as Google Maps™, expandable Memory (up to 32 GB), picture messaging, and Bluetooth. The phone is available from Sprint in the U.S.

OvationONS sensor is a superior 2-D motion sensor system solution.  The solution enables reliable optical tracking performance for all operating environments.  The OvationONS sensor is based on Cypress’s PSoC programmable technology. The programmable advantages enables the sensor to self adjust tracking performance according to different conditions such as operating temperature, tracking surfaces, ambient light conditions and more.  More information, including a new video demonstrating the advantage of OvationONS II, is available at www.cypress.com/go/ONS.

“We’re excited to see a world leader such as Samsung adopt our optical technology, which provides a superior solution for single-handed navigation in a phone” said Dinesh Ramanathan, executive vice president of Cypress’s Data Communications Division. “We’re confident that users will appreciate the difference in performance and ease-of-use the OvationONS II provides.”
