Curtiss-Wright Controls Debuts New Rugged Solid-State HD Video Data Recorder

ASHBURN, VA – July 20, 2011 – Curtiss-Wright Controls Embedded Computing (CWCEC), a business group of Curtiss-Wright Controls and a leading designer and manufacturer of commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) VME, VPX, OpenVPX™ and CompactPCI products for the rugged deployed aerospace and defense market, has introduced the newest addition to its industry leading Skyquest™ family of rugged video recorders, the Skyquest VRDV-5002 High Definition Video Recorder. The VRDV-5002 is a compact, lightweight, high definition (HD) video recorder that features a unique solid-state low-cost CompactFlash®-based storage system and supports video and/or audio capture and playback during the mission. The VRDV-5002 is designed for use in applications that require optimal performance in harsh environments, including extreme temperature, high shock and vibration conditions. It speeds and simplifies the integration of high performance HD video recording into space, weight and power (SWaP) constrained airborne and ground military, paramilitary, and search & rescue platforms.

“Our Skyquest VRDV-5002 HD video recorder is the smallest rugged professional quality HD recorder with replay available today,” said Lynn Bamford, vice president and general manager of Curtiss-Wright Controls Embedded Computing. “They replace cumbersome, expensive video approaches with low-cost, highly rugged solid-state CompactFlash memory cards.”

Curtiss-Wright’s Skyquest line of video recorders is designed for capturing mission video in the most demanding environments. Video formats supported include Composite or

S-Video in PAL or NTSC format, or the latest HD video from the leading EO sensor systems. The VRDV-5002 delivers industry leading, broadcast quality MPEG2 recording onto one or two (2) CompactFlash cards, to deliver up to >3 hours of full quality recording capability.

The lightweight, compact VRDV-5002 is housed in a rugged all-aluminum chassis with simplified Dzus fasteners. Designed for SWaP constrained applications, the VRDV-5002   measures 146 mm x 56 mm x 256 mm and weighs 1.5 kg. The unit supports a single channel HD-SDI input and output.

Skyquest VRDV-5002 Performance Features

  • Up to two (2) standard high-density CompactFlash cards
  • Depending on card density and bandwidth, can record >3 hours on a single card
  • Instant playback of any video/audio clip, no need to rewind
  • Low bit rate high compression for minimized mission storage requirements
  • Simple file transfer to Blu-ray™ Disc (BD) for playback on any media PC
  • Remote control supported via Skyquest rugged video display
  • Compact and Lightweight
  • Variable quality settings
  • Supports Playback during the mission
