IAR Systems Collaborates with Qualcomm Atheros in Bringing to Market the Industry’s First Wi-Fi System-in-Package Development System

Foster City, CA—June 16, 2011—IAR Systems® today announced its collaboration with Qualcomm Atheros on its new AR4100 solution, a highly integrated, Wi-Fi system-in-package (SIP) for microcontroller based design. The new module is based on Qualcomm Atheros’ industry-leading 802.11b/g/n single-stream Wi-Fi Align® technology, enabling long range transmission while minimizing energy consumption. IAR Embedded Workbench® for ARM® was selected as the preferred development tool for this Wi-Fi microcontroller (MCU) device.

The AR4100 is optimized for client applications hosted by low-resource MCUs that send infrequent data packets over the network. MCUs interface to the AR4100 via a simple serial peripheral interface bus (SPI) and will be initially aimed at customers in the smart home, smart grid and smart building markets.

“We are pleased to be working closely with Qualcomm Atheros in providing our development tools for the AR4100,” said Nadim Shehayed, general manager of Americas, IAR Systems. “The AR4100 Wi-Fi solution target market is an area that IAR Systems has a key presence in and we look forward to supporting our mutual customers.”

“IAR Embedded Workbench and tool-chain is very intuitive and easy to configure. The whole process of project creation to image download is simple and hassle free. My team was instinctively able to utilize it, out of the box, to build projects very quickly,” said Mahesh Iyer, director of software engineering, Qualcomm Atheros. “The debugging feature that comes with the tool was well liked by the development team. The IDE itself, unlike many others, has a much better response time and allows for faster development. My team has been able to cut down development time by a significant margin as a result.”
