NEC LCD Technologies and Renesas Electronics Europe Announce Availability of Two New 7.2-inch 3D Displays for Use in Industrial Display Applications

Dusseldorf, 20th May 2011 – NEC LCD Technologies Ltd, (NLT), together with Renesas Electronics Europe, its sales and marketing channel in Europe, today announced the introduction of two new 7.2-inch 3D colour thin film transistor (AM-TFT) LCD modules for industrial display applications, the NL8060BH18-01 and NL8060BH18-02. The modules incorporate NLT’s proprietary HDDP (horizontally double-density pixels) technology and are targeted for use in a variety of industrial applications such as 3D CAD/CAM, technical/user manuals, broadcasting, mapping and topography.

Conventional LCDs are based on square pixel arrangements, with RGB sub-pixels distributed in vertical stripes and two pixels necessary to display a 3D image, cutting the display’s horizontal resolution in half. NLT’s HDDP technology with lenticular lens RGB rotates sub-pixels 90 degrees and divides them to achieve double-density resolution, making it possible for 2- and 3-dimensional images to be displayed simultaneously on the same screen without the need for 3D glasses. When the information displayed for each eye differs slightly (one image for the left and a slightly different image for the right) the image is perceived as 3D.

A common issue with 3D displays is 3D cross talk which occurs when the human visual system mixes left-eye and right-eye information, causing the 3D effects to be limited or decreased. NLT’s HDDP 3D technology results in displays with low levels of overall 3D cross talk of around 7% to 8%. The displays have a wide 3D viewing area and images are easily viewed because of the low levels of cross talk.

“Most of us are familiar with the use of 3D imaging in gaming systems to create excitement and drama for the viewer. However, the two HDDP 3D displays we are introducing from NLT are designed for higher-end industrial applications requiring 3D performance to more clearly illustrate or highlight variations in details, such as those in CAD/CAM drawings or even technical manuals, and more closely replicate the actual device or activity being illustrated,” said Hideto Tachimoto, Senior Manager, LCD Product Unit, Industrial Business Group, Renesas Electronics Europe GmbH. “The application of NLT’s 3D technology to an industrial device puts the user ‘inside’ the event or product and creates an entirely different user experience of a device, event or activity.”
