Green Hills Software Selects Icon Labs for its Embedded Firewall Solution

Embedded Systems Conference, San Jose, CA –  (May 3, 2011) – Icon Labs (www.iconlabs.com ) a leading provider of embedded networking and security technology, and Green Hills Software, the largest independent vendor of embedded software solutions, today announced the availability of Icon Labs’ Floodgate Packet Filter as a service for Green Hills Platform for Secure Networking. With this combined solution, Green Hills’ customers can quickly and efficiently extend its networked products layer 3 protections from Internet-based attacks – delivering maximum threat protection for customers’ internet-connected devices.

Researchers from Columbia University’s Intrusion Detection Systems Lab have shown embedded devices are far more vulnerable to Internet-based threats than Enterprise Networks.  The researchers have established a global average vulnerability rate for devices such as home routers, cable modems, and webcams, of 41.62% compared to 2.46% for enterprise devices.  As network connectivity in embedded devices has become commonplace and our reliance on these devices has grown, so has the importance of protecting these devices from Internet-based threats.

“We are partnering with Icon Labs because their Floodgate technology provides a drop-in embedded firewall solution for our INTEGRITY real-time operating system, the foundation for our Platform for Secure Networking,” said Dan Mender, vice president of business development, Green Hills Software. “By combining the foundational security of our INTEGRITY operating system with the proven, secure and reliable firewall solution from Icon Labs, Green Hills Software’s customers can develop industry leading secure solutions that provide expansive protection from a wide range of growing Internet-based attacks.”

“We are pleased to be partnering with the largest independent embedded software provider to offer our embedded firewall offering as a seamless add-on to their INTEGRITY-based software solutions and platforms,” said Alan Grau, CEO of Icon Labs. “Increasingly, embedded devices are subject to the same threats as PCs in corporate and home environments.  By adding Icon Labs’ Floodgate firewall to your INTEGRITY-based network connected devices, Green Hills’ customers can deliver the utmost threat protection for the anticipated threats the Internet will deliver.”

Floodgate Packet Filter is a comprehensive product that can be integrated into a wide variety of network-enabled device designs to provide protection against the ever-growing number of Internet-based attacks.  Threshold-based filtering protects against denial of service attacks, broadcast storms and other conditions that result in a flood of unwanted packets.  Rules-based filtering allows white-listing and black-listing based on criteria such as port number, protocol or source IP address and Stateful Packet Inspection (SPI) provides dynamic packet filtering based on the state of a connection.

The combination of Green Hills’ INTEGRITY operating system and Icon Labs’ Floodgate Packet Filter make it easy to add complete, configurable firewall protection to your end product, all running on the industries most proven, secure real time operating system – INTEGRITY .  The solution is being demonstrated at Green Hills’ booth (#916) at the Embedded Systems Conference Silicon Valley, May 3-5, 2011.
