HDCP GMSL chipset enables secure transmission of digital content

SUNNYVALE, CA—April 13, 2011—Maxim Integrated Products (NASDAQ: MXIM) introduces the latest members of its high-speed LVDS serializer/deserializer (SerDes) family: the MAX9263/MAX9265 serializers and MAX9264 deserializer. This gigabit multimedia serial link (GMSL) chipset features high-bandwidth digital content protection (HDCP), and forms a complete, secure, bidirectional digital-video link (HDCP-GMSL*) for transmission of digital video and audio over a single DC-balanced twisted-pair or differential line. The chipset manages all HCDP protocol transactions, supports touch-screen communications, and eliminates the CAN/LIN bus for diagnostics. The MAX9263/MAX9265 and MAX9264 HDCP-GMSL chipset is optimized for automotive infotainment and rear-seat entertainment applications.

Maxim’s proprietary differential, full-duplex control channel handles all HDCP protocol transactions. It eliminates the need for an external CAN or LIN interface, thus simplifying design while saving space and cost. This approach also enables bidirectional communication with the display module for touch-screen applications. Additionally, programmable spread-spectrum modulation reduces EMI, making it easier to pass automotive compliance tests. Other protective features include isolation between the serializer and deserializer through AC coupling. Integrated hot-swap capability increases fault tolerance and allows “on-the-fly” frequency programming. Line-fault detection and integrated self-test features check for link integrity at system power-up.

The MAX9263/MAX9265 operate from a 1.8V core supply, and the MAX9264 operates from a 3.3V supply. These devices feature a separate input supply for interfacing to 1.8V to 3.3V logic levels. The MAX9265 serializer features an LVDS system interface; the MAX9263/MAX9264 have parallel interfaces.

The MAX9263/MAX9264 are packaged in a 10mm x 10mm, 64-pin TQFP, while the MAX9265 comes in a 7mm x 7mm, 48-pin TQFP. These devices are fully specified over the -40 degrees Celsius to +105 degrees Celsius temperature range. Prices start at $5.55 for MAX9263/MAX9264 and at $6.81 for the MAX9265 (1000-up, FOB USA). Device data sheets, evaluation kits, and samples are available under NDA.
