Ashburn, VA – March 1, 2011 – Curtiss-Wright Controls Embedded Computing (CWCEC), a business group of Curtiss-Wright Controls and a leading designer and manufacturer of rugged deployed commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) VME, VPX, OpenVPX™, VXS and CompactPCI products for the Aerospace and Defense (A&D) market, has announced that it has taken a leadership role in offering lead-free assemblies on selected strategic product lines. These CWCEC products have been designed, tested and built using the company’s extensive lead-free knowledge base and have been implemented using advanced approaches to reduce lead-free risk and provide customers confidence in meeting their rugged reliability requirements
“CWCEC is committed to maintaining the high reliability of its products for the aerospace and defense sector,” said Lynn Bamford, vice president and general manager of Curtiss-Wright Controls Embedded Computing. “We are pleased to be able to offer lead-free products on some of our strategic product lines that have been designed, tested and built using our lead-free knowledge base.”
The introduction of lead-free components and assemblies into aerospace and defense systems poses a substantial reliability risk unless proper measures are taken. To meet this challenge, CWCEC has, over the last several years, worked diligently to develop an expansive lead-free knowledge base. This lead-free expertise includes connections to leading edge lead-free research, standards and policy establishments (for example, the PERM (Pb-free Electronics Risk Management consortium). CWCEC has taken specific measures to optimize the use of lead-free components in rugged COTS products, including detailed analysis of the various reliability risks and the implementation of effective mitigations against these risks.
CWCEC products currently offered as lead-free assemblies include:
- VPX3-1256 3U VPX Intel Core i7 quad core SBC
- VPX6-1956 6U VPX Intel Core i7 quad core SBC
- VPX6-1952 6U VPX Intel® Core2 T9400-based single board computer (SBC)
- VPX3-1252 3U VPX Intel® Core2 Duo-based SBC
- SVME/DMV-1905 6U VME Intel® Core i7-based SBC
- CHAMP-AV5 Intel® Core i7™ multi-processing DSP Engine (2011)
- CHAMP-AV8 2nd Generation Intel® Core i7™ multi-processing DSP Engine
- VPF2 6U VXS Power® Architecture/Dual Xilinx® Virtex™-5 FPGA board
- XMC-FPGA05F Xilinx® Virtex™-5 XMC mezzanine module with quad fiber-optic transceivers
- XMC-FPGA05D Xilinx® Virtex™-5 high density I/O PMC/XMC mezzanine module
“Our extensive effort to develop expertise in lead-free technology places us at the forefront of COTS companies that understand lead-free and its myriad impacts on rugged embedded computing electronics, added Ms. Bamford. “More importantly, it has given us the basis from which to evaluate, analyze, test and implement risk reduction approaches.”
To maintain and enhance its leadership position in bringing lead-free technology to the embedded COTS market, CWCEC will continue to perform research and testing of new approaches for dealing with lead-free, and will continue its involvement in industry activities to leverage leading edge knowledge.
