Happy Birthday Curiosity

Strictly speaking it is not the fifth birthday of Mars Rover Curiosity, since it had been built over many years and its journey from Earth to Mars took months but it was five (Earth) years ago that Curiosity landed on Mars for a 90 day mission. And it is still trundling around. Just shows that you can build reliable embedded systems.

Safety and Security Conference

With the growth of the IoT there is increased interest in the overlapping areas of safety and security. There is already a lot of knowledge on these issues and this has been shared by the IET’s International System Safety and Cyber Security Conference. The eleventh version of this conference is running from 11—13 October 2016 in London. The organisers state that it is the largest conference for system safety specialists held in the UK; and the only conference where both safety and security engineers from around the world can meet and share ideas, new research and network.

ARM: We’re Turning Japanese

This is what $32 billion gets you: Almost the whole world. UK-based ARM announced last night that it has agreed to be acquired by Tokyo-based SoftBank, a large holding company that owns many technology firms as well as some technical publications. It’s also the majority shareholder in U.S. celluar carrier Sprint. It’s fair to say that SoftBank’s holdings are wide-ranging.

What does this mean for ARM, ARM’s employees, and ARM’s customers?

A New Step Forward for 3D Printed Fashion?

3D printed fashion is not new at this point. Printed accessories, jewelery, and even dresses have been showing up at Maker Faires, 3D Printing shows, and other technology/fashion showcases for several years now. Last year, I wrote about some of the 3D printed fashion at the 3D Printing Conference and Expo in New York City and the exciting intersection between art and technology being represented at that show.

This weekend, I feel like I witnessed a sign of a … Read More → "A New Step Forward for 3D Printed Fashion?"

A More Secure Time Server

We would be nowhere without clocks. So much of what we do involves timing, much of which we’re completely unaware of – in particular, electronically. Many of our systems depend on some kind of a master clock so that logging and timestamping can be done reliably. And with the advent of even more “asynchronous” systems that report events with a timestamp, soon even more systems will need access to a reliable time source. If you are looking for best vpn app, check the best free vpn in India at the link. You … Read More → "A More Secure Time Server"

Fancy walking around with urine in your socks?

According to a press release from the University of the West of England in Bristol, a team working under Professor Ioannis Ieropoulos has developed socks with inbuilt microbial fuel cells (MFCs). These generate electric current from bacteria, using the bio-chemical energy normally used for microbial growth. MFCs have previously been used to power a mobile phone, using an electric pump (which was used only for proof of concept. The socks include a urine reservoir and a manual pump, powered by the user walking, pushes the urine over the cells. The cells power a wireless transmission board, which can send … Read More → "Fancy walking around with urine in your socks?"
