Active-Semi Introduces Industry’s First Fully-Integrated Single-Chip Solution to Extend Smart Phone and Tablet Computer Battery Life

Dallas, TX – November 5, 2013 – To meet the growing worldwide demand for power hungry smart phones and tablet computers, Active-Semi today announced a new family of Power Bank IC solutions, the ACT2800 product family. The first two devices in this evolutionary product series are the ACT2801 and ACT2802. These first-of-a-kind single-chip solutions offer numerous benefits including the smallest solution footprint combined with high efficiency at low total system cost.  Prior to general release, the ACT2800 family of products has experienced significant customer interest with more than 25 design wins.

The ACT2800 family was architected to integrate the complete Power Bank functionality into one system-on-a-chip.  Power Bank chipsets on the market today require multiple ICs, such as micro controller units (MCUs), to perform the charging and battery management functions in addition to several discrete components. The ACT2800 family reduces the system footprint and minimizes design complexity, while leaving room for larger batteries and reducing total system cost.

The ACT2801 device supports output current up to 1.5A while the ACT2802 supports output current up to 2.1A to reduce charging time whenusing larger batteries.

“We are excited by the market traction for our integrated Power Bank IC solutions,” says Mark Cieri, Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Active-Semi. “We are providing our customers with high performance in the most compact footprint. Our turnkey solution also accelerates time-to-market for our customers, which is equally critical.”

The ACT2800 family of products features:

  • 95% power conversion efficiency
  • Low battery leakage current of under 10 uA extends battery discharge cycle
  • Programmable current limiting
  • Protection features including over-temperature protection, over-current protection, over-voltage protection, short-circuit protection
  • Push-button user input
  • LED based “power meter” for battery level indication

ACT2801 and ACT2802 are in production now. For more information, and to order samples and evaluation kits, please visit www.active-semi.com/powerbank or email sales@active-semi.com
