Intrinsic-ID Launches Cloud Security Application Using ‘Electronic Fingerprint’

Eindhoven, The Netherlands, October 17th, 2012 – Intrinsic-ID launches Saturnus®, an application that puts users back in control of their digital lives. With Saturnus, users can easily protect data with their mobile devices before sending it to the cloud. Intrinsic-ID’s Hardware Intrinsic Security (HIS) technology gives Saturnus users peace of mind regarding the confidentiality of their data. It is the first application that offers security based on the combination of a two-factor protection, AES encryption and a software/hardware binding. Saturnus addresses both corporations as well as consumers.

Unique level of security

The security in Saturnus is based on a two-factor protection: “something the user knows” – a password- and “something the user has” – a mobile phone, tablet or PC that is equipped with HIS e.g. as embedded on smartcards of partner companies Oberthur Technologies and INSIDE Secure.

HIS technology binds the data in the cloud by using the ‘electronic fingerprint’ of the device.

Use cases

Saturnus enables many applications, such as: teleworking, mobile workforces but also remote diagnostics and treatments of patients, secure cloud capability, etc. Users can rely on Saturnus to protect their e-mails and SMS data, agenda, financials, payment data and other sensitive data in the cloud. The application also includes an auto fill capability for easy, fast and secure web-based payments.

“HIS technology brings innovative security solution for the cloud. We are pleased to extend our partnership with Intrinsic-ID to support the Saturnus application with a range of HIS-based Secure Elements, including SIM cards”, said Marc Bertin, CTO of Oberthur Technologies. “We are continuously strengthening the security of our products and this will benefit to Saturnus large scale deployment.

Saturnus demonstrations

Intrinsic-ID will demonstrate Saturnus at the Cartes exhibition in Paris on 6 – 8 November on a number of smart phones and tablets.

“The combination of the connected world and cloud storage offers tremendous new opportunities to optimize and create new business by enabling data access anytime, anywhere. Most industry observers, however, agree that the main blocking factor for widespread use of cloud storage services is the lack of security for data stored in the cloud,” said Pim Tuyls CEO of Intrinsic-ID.  “With Saturnusthis is no longer an issue. Saturnus allows users to protect their data in the cloud while also being able to easily access it anytime, anywhere.”

“INSIDE Secure selected the HIS technology as offered by Intrinsic-ID to address the growing demands to raise the levels of security and enable more flexible key management in smartcards”, said Christian Fleutelot, General Manager & EVP Digital Security at INSIDE Secure. “We offer a fast-track support for the use of Saturnus in the field. Customers can choose from a wide range of our HIS-based smartcards in several formats like a USB-stick or packaged into a microSDcard to insert in phones, tablets and PCs. We also provide NFC-enabled smartcards that can serve as universal security dongle for Saturnus.”

About Intrinsic-ID

Intrinsic-ID is the world-wide leader in security IP cores and applications based on Hardware Intrinsic Security (HIS), also referred to as ‘Physical Unclonable Function’. In this patented technology secret keys are extracted from the properties of chips like an electronic fingerprint that is used to protect electronic data on systems and in the cloud by binding the data with the hardware of a device. Intrinsic-ID was founded in 2008 as a spin-out of Royal Philips Electronics and is headquartered in Eindhoven, The Netherlands. www.intrinsic-id.com
