WiSpry Demonstrates Seven-Fold Extension of LTE Bandwidth in Smartphones

Irvine, Calif. — August 8, 2012 — WiSpry, Inc., the leader in high-performance tunable radio frequency (RF) semiconductors for the wireless industry, today announced it has demonstrated that its WS1033 LTE Antenna Tuner has successfully extended usable bandwidth on an LTE smartphone from 25 MHz to 180 MHz without changing the production antenna.

Using two identical, commercially available LTE phones, WiSpry modified one phone with the WS1033-based antenna tuning network and left the second phone unmodified. WiSpry showed that the phone modified with the WS1033 had far higher usable bandwidth of 180 MHz (700 MHz – 880 MHz) , compared to < 25 MHz for the unmodified phone. This marks the first time that off-the-shelf antennas in Smartphone form factors have achieved such a dramatic LTE bandwidth extension.

“This demonstration proves that 700 MHz LTE antennas that are tuned with our technology have excellent and constant radiation properties over an extremely wide bandwidth,” said Jeffrey Hilbert, president and founder of WiSpry. “The addition of the WS1033 extended the 700 MHz bandwidth more than seven times and enabled us to cover band XII through Band V with no change to the antenna element. With the many different LTE bands in use, this enables the creation of a true global LTE phone that consumers will come to demand.”

The WiSpry WS1033 allows engineers to select the optimum circuit configuration for their antenna tuning requirements and features both a MIPI Alliance RFFE 1.1 interface and a 3/4-wire SPI interface, which makes it plug-and-play compatible with all major smartphone chipsets. Like every WiSpry product, the WS1033 provides the industry’s highest RF performance, lowest energy consumption and outstanding linearity to support LTE, SVLTE and carrier aggregation applications.
